St. Matthew's Church, Perth have recently undergone a huge refurbishment to make the church more accessible with a more practical use of space. Being a member of the Church I know that it is a family-like community, keen to make everyone feel welcome.
The spire itself is an iconic feature of the Perth skyline, often appearing in advertisements for local businesses, the council, markets etc. Working with the Church team we felt it was important to reclaim the spire but also show that there is more to the church than just the silhouette. Incorporating some of the internal architectural features created the optical illusion of doors leading in but also out of the Church.
In one sense we are seeing the outside of the Church with it's doors open, but when we look at the internal features it feels as if we are looking from the inside out, a reflection of the way St. Matthew's is seeking to open it's doors and reach beyond it's own walls.
